On June 20, Fazian Rehman stood outside the third closed petrol station he had visited in Muzaffarabad, holding an empty bottle. His motorcycle had run out of fuel while he was taking his wife to hospital. Markets had been shut, public transport was off the roads, internet service remained suspended, and a political dispute over twelve legislative seats had entered the ordinary machinery of a family trying to reach a doctor.

That bottle was June’s most accurate economic indicator.

Pakistan’s federal government presented a Rs17.1 trillion budget built around 4.1 percent growth and 8.2 percent inflation. The stock exchange ended a powerful fiscal year. Remittances again supplied the foreign currency that domestic production did not. Yet consumer prices in June were 11.1 percent higher than a year earlier, terrorism killed civilians and security personnel from Peshawar to Karachi, and Azad Jammu and Kashmir spent much of the month under a communications blackout after its government classified a mass civic movement as a terrorist organisation.

The government described these files separately: fiscal consolidation, public order, counterterrorism, migration management and climate preparedness. Pakistanis encountered them together. A higher petroleum levy enters the same household that pays a larger electricity bill. A communications shutdown stops the same trader whose taxes the budget intends to document. A security operation and a militant attack close the same road. A 51°C day arrives in the same country whose finance ministry says one average natural disaster could add 1.5 percent of GDP to the fiscal deficit.

June was not a collection of sixty unrelated headlines. It was one governing system meeting the consequences of its own choices.

May 2026 was the month Pakistan’s army chief made two trips to Tehran and flew to Beijing alongside the Prime Minister, and the month the Punjab wheat procurement model collapsed with private aggregators securing less than a fifth of their revised target. Inflation was projected to hit 11.0 to 11.5 percent year-on-year, the highest reading in 23 months. The IMF Executive Board completed its third review and released a disbursement, simultaneously cutting Pakistan’s FY27 growth forecast from 4.1 percent to 3.5 percent and raising inflation projections for the coming year. FDI for the first ten months of FY2026 came in at $1.409 billion, down 31 percent from the same period the previous fiscal year. The HRCP launched its annual report on May 4, documenting a year of severe contraction of civic space, 1,272 terrorist attacks and counter-terrorism operations resulting in 3,417 deaths, 1,696 people killed in police encounters, and prisons running at 171 percent of stated capacity. Gilgit-Baltistan was heading toward a June 7 election in which a candidate from a recently proscribed organisation and a candidate linked to a group associated with Hafiz Saeed were both on the ballot, and PTI was alleging that its campaign leaders were being blocked from reaching the constituency.

The Baloch Yakjehti Committee documented fresh enforced disappearances across Balochistan throughout the month, including raids conducted on the eve of Eid. Imran Khan reached approximately 1,000 days in Adiala Jail with his family reporting the loss of most vision in one eye and no court date fixed for pending petitions. PM Shehbaz Sharif concluded a four-day visit to Beijing on May 25, signing a joint statement pledging to advance CPEC 2.0 and establish Gwadar as a regional connectivity hub. The Torkham crossing remained closed, entering its seventh consecutive month. The budget was scheduled for June 5.

For three weeks Islamabad was the return address on documents being passed between Washington and Tehran. For three weeks the city was locked down, the roads were sealed, the fruit trucks waited outside the perimeter with their perishable cargo. The world watched Pakistan. Pakistan, meanwhile, was absorbing its worst inflation shock in two years, its first interest rate hike in three, the highest fuel prices in its history, and the full first-wave impact of a global energy crisis whose instrument is the Strait of Hormuz — not a diplomatic inconvenience but an act of sustained economic war against every country that moves fuel through it, which is most of the world. The diplomatic role ended the month unconsummated: no second round of talks, the ceasefire fragile, the Strait barely moving, and the structural damage already running through the food supply chain and into the flour price. The Baloch Yakjehti Committee submitted documented evidence of 1,481 enforced disappearances to the Government of Balochistan. The government received the list and did not respond publicly. The VBMP protest camp outside the Quetta Press Club passed its 6,150th day. The month ended the way every month ends in Pakistan: with the official register describing stability and the lived register describing the approach of something worse.

1. Balochistan Coordinated Attacks Kill Dozens in Deadliest Day

The Balochistan Liberation Army (BLA) launched one of the most sophisticated and deadly coordinated attacks in recent Pakistani history on January 31, 2026.
